Areola Tattoo

What is areola tattooing?

Custom areola tattooing, sometimes called 3D nipple tattooing or areola micropigmentation, is a non-surgical, cosmetic tattoo procedure that involves embedding organic pigment beneath the skin to create a natural, permanent, and beautiful-looking nipple and areola.

For many breast cancer survivors, as well anyone who is in the process of undergoing gender confirmation surgery, areola tattooing is the final step in their reconstruction journey. This procedure may also be performed to benefit anyone who has any irregularity in their areola color or shape.

Procedure

This quick and nearly painless procedure uses a variety of advanced micro-pigmented techniques to create a natural looking and realistic final result.

After drawing an outline of the areola, the technician uses a specialized tattoo instrument to transfer pigment into the skin. Areola tattooing requires advanced micropigmentation techniques like shadowing, blending, feathering, and contouring in order to recreate a natural-looking nipple. In some cases multiple treatment sessions may be needed to achieve the final desired look.

There is a complete assortment of hypo-allergenic areola pigment colors. We will work with you to select a color or colors that will be a custom and natural match for you.

Benefits

Areola tattooing can create an areola after breast reconstruction, minimize the appearance of scars, and restore an areola to a more natural looking color and shape.

Is the procedure painful?

Everyone's pain tolerance is different. For many post-mastectomy patients, the process of areola tattooing is completely pain free. Patients who received an implant during breast reconstruction, however, may feel some discomfort. In these instances, a topical anesthetic can be applied at the beginning of the procedure

in order to minimize pain.

How long will the results last?

Like any other tattoo, some fading of pigment is possible. However, areola tattoos can often last a lifetime as the tattoo is less likely to be exposed to the sun.

Is areola tattooing an option for me if I have breast implants?

Yes, you must wait one year after surgery.
